One of the big stories this week is how college basketball player Jallen Messersmith came out to his not only his fellow teammates and the people at his Roman Catholic school, but to everyone.

While this is awesome and a great step forward for sports in general, in regards to accepting gay and lesbian players into the fold, I’m still hoping for the day that a story like this doesn’t make the news. The day when something like this doesn’t mean anything because it has become part of the norm.

My guess is that this day won’t come for a long time, and the only way to get there is by having more of these stories published right now. So please, spread the word. Make stories like this one become boring so that the stigma and stereotypes that go along with members of the LGBTQ community can eventually vanish, hopefully sooner rather than later.
