The discussion of how women vs. men are viewed in politics is nothing new, however there are new studies confirming what has already been said.
It usually goes like this: why are female politicians shoes a topic of conversation in the media? Why are their personality traits so discussed within newspapers and magazines? Why has the New York Times focused on female politicians purses when there are many other things that should be given print space?
The fact that there are already less women in government is a problem as it is, but even if the women to men ratio becomes completely equal, the way that we as a society talk about them will still prove to be an issue.
Only when we can talk about both men and women in politics in the same way will there even begin to be equality between the demographics.
If we have to keep fashion within the political discussion I’m thinking a feature on Senator’s ties would be a good place to start.
