First it was #MotorcycleVagina, now, the state of North Carolina is doing it’s best to restrict voting rights primarily for those who are college students.
The bill, H.B. 589, does the following:
- Requires voters to display specific types of government-issue ID’s at the polls – College ID’s are not accepted.
- Removes pre-registration for high school students (this is how I registered to vote).
- Cuts early voting time.
- Eliminates same-day registration.
The GOP backed bill is targeting young voters, who tend to vote Democrat. Supporters of bills like these say that the new restrictions will help prevent voter fraud, however according to certain studies, this is less common than getting struck by lightening.
All of this is in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to strike down sections of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, an act that had been working so well SCOTUS felt the need to get rid of it.
The Supreme Court’s act of removing sections of the VRA has been overlooked, by and large, by the media due to the celebratory frenzy that took place right around the same time for the court’s decision to also strike down DOMA and Prop 8.
H.B. 589 is probably the first of many laws that will be passed by Republican led legislature in attempts to make sure states that are already GOP led will stay that way.
