The greatest superhero since Wonder Woman is finally here.
Pakistani pop star Aaron Haroon Rashid has created the Burka Avenger, a female character who is a school teacher by day, and book throwing, pen wielding superhero by night. The goal is to illustrate what is going on in the Taliban ruled country (i.e. repeated attacks on female students and girls schools) in a way that children can understand.
In civilian life, Jiya, is a teacher in her local town. She wears civilian clothes until night, when she becomes the Burka Avenger, and in an ironic twist she reclaims the Burka, what has been traditionally seen as oppressive clothing forced upon women under rule of the Taliban.
The show has already premiered on Geo TV, which serves as one of Pakistan’s largest television networks and will be accompanied by music videos and a soundtrack.
