Offensive fashion is nothing new, but this mini-headdress from H&M is.
Many times, people say that if it’s fashion, it’s nothing to get upset over. Fashion is controversial, and therefore it can be offensive.
Mass producing a headdress not only promotes the stereotype that all Native Americans are tomahawk throwing, face paint-wearing savages, it also mocks what is really a ceremonial covering that is worn only by the brave and powerful. Many of those wearing what is now known as the “hipster headdress” (seriously, besides the fact that this is atrocious to begin with, who even thought calling it that was a good idea?) haven’t even got the slightest clue as to what the headdress means, where the feathers come from and their meaning, the process of making an ACTUAL headdress, or what it takes to actually earn one.
Anyone even considering wearing a headdress in 2013 who is not directly part of a Native American tribe needs to check themselves, fashion directors and designers included.
