In the Westview Shopping Center in Spring Branch, Texas, signs proclaiming “No Muslim Parking” were posted, upsetting Muslim worshippers on their way to the nearby mosque.
Shoppers from the mall have said that there has been problems in the past of people attending services using the mall’s parking lot.
It is still unknown who had posted the signs, however the owner did eventually take them down.
It is valid for mall authorities to post signs saying that only mall goers can use the lot. However, stating “No Muslim Parking” is the most offensive way to go about it.
Where I live, there is a bar with a slightly smaller sized parking lot. The bar is directly across the street from a Rite Aid. Throughout the entire parking lot, there are signs that say something to the effect of “Parking for Rite Aid Customers Only.”
This is perfectly acceptable. If you’re not in Rite Aid, don’t use their lot. It’s unfair to their customers and employees. The same can be said for those going to the mosque. If you’re not going to the mall, don’t use their lot.
All this being said, phrasing such a thing as “No Muslim Parking” is the worst way to go about things. I mean, seriously. The way this is phrased harkens back to segregated water fountains and entrances.
It’s fine for the mall to only allow use of their lot to their customers. But for real, learn some tact.
