District 9 Councilwoman Elisa Chan went on a anti-gay rant (click here to listen) that she didn’t know was being recorded by her aide, James Stevens.
Try getting past the six minute mark. The amount of uneducated, discriminatory statements are literally unbearable. And this was all supposed to be in a meeting on an anti-discrimination ordinance that would prevent discrimination based on veteran status, sexual orientation and gender identity for city jobs.
The conversation goes through the usual ill-informed stereotypes that surround the gay community. I.E. sex between two people of the same gender is a crime against nature, being gay leads to incest and bestiality, people choose to be gay, they aren’t born that way, etc.
Another topic of conversation is the theory that in families who have four or more male children, the younger ones have a 70% greater chance of being gay, because, according to science, the older ones are the hunter-gatherers, and if something happens to them then the younger ones step up and take care of the family because they have a more maternal sense about them.
Even if this were true, which I have yet to find studies confirming it on any point, what the hell would it matter? There’s nothing wrong with being gay so who cares about it either way.
But, tada! this led me to the conclusion of why the term “gay” is an insult. Gay men are assumed to be more feminine than “real men,” and who wants to be associated with women? NO ONE. Not even women want to be women so why would a man want to be associated with them?
It finally makes sense. It’s stupid, rife with ill-informed theories that have no basis in reality but finally it makes sense.
Try to get through the full 15 minutes of this, just try. I know I can’t do it.
