Honi Soit, the University of Sydney student newspaper, made a statement by publishing 18 vulva on their cover. This statement was then guillotined by student politicians at the school, who said the cover was offensive and illegal.

The initial purpose of the cover was to protest the mainstream depiction of women’s bodies. It was to show a side by side of 18 different women’s bodies and illustrate how one isn’t better than the other, it’s just different.

According to the Student Representative Council, it is illegal in Australia to publish “indecent articles” inside a magazine, which obviously means that the cover is out of the question. Also according to the SRC, vulvas are indecent articles which must be hidden from everyone because they are offensive.

The paper tried to continue with their plan by putting black box censors over each of the vulvas on the cover, however through a printing error the boxes were not all opaque and some of the original images showed through.

The result of all of this is that thousands of copies of the magazine are going to have been pulled from the shelved and will have their covers removed.
