September 1, LEGO released it’s female scientist figurine, named simply, “Scientist,” a woman holding two Erlenmeyer flasks and wearing a lab coat.
This is obviously a step in the right direction for the whole boys toys vs. girls toys argument, but considering the ratio of male figurines vs. female figurines in the LEGO lineup, the toy company still has a long way to go.
That being said, it’s awesome that the Scientist isn’t wearing pink, and she’s not called “Lady Scientist” or “Mrs. Scientist” or anything like that. She’s just a scientist, just as everything else in the world shouldn’t be labeled with female prefixes, unless it’s a proper name.
Weird side-note: The Scientist’s name is C. Bodin, which when I first read it made me think of Katrina Bowden of 30 Rock fame, since I didn’t know how the actress spelled her name. I don’t think there’s a connection, but thought it was weird enough to point out.
