Richard Cohen blames Miley Cyrus for the Steubenville rape case. Well actually, he doesn’t think that case was that bad, because there were no penises involved.
I’ll never stop writing if I explain just how much of a problem that I have with Cohen’s statements but what I will say is this, rape is rape is rape. The general definition, which varies by state, is as follows: Rape is forced sexual intercourse, including vaginal, anal, or oral penetration. Penetration may be by a body part or an object.
FYI Mr. Cohen, there need not be penises involved for it to be rape, for males or females.
Saying that the Steubenville case is not as bad as other cases of rape not only lets the guilty off easy, it creates an atmosphere where sexual assault is considered OK. Saying that the internet created “a digital lynch mob that demanded the arrest of the innocent for a crime — gang rape — that had not been committed,” says that rape did not happen, and that the guilty should be let free.
Cohen’s remarks have been met with a lot of responses, one of the best coming from rapper Angel Haze, who rips apart the Washington Post’s opinion writer better in 140 characters than most people I know could if they had room for an entire novel.
