Well, not riot necessarily, but as much of a riot that is possible in government and political settings.

After passing a law that allows transgendered students to choose which bathrooms, sports teams and locker rooms they use, California Gov. Jerry Brown is under fire from many conservatives, parents and Republicans for doing so.

Complaints against the bill include:

  • “Many people who wrote to the governor wrote to me as well, asking the state to not impose the social values of the most liberal politicians on our classrooms.” – Assemblyman Curt Hagman, R-Chino Hills
  • Young people don’t know how to handle the blending of the bathrooms.
  • Students will simply decide that they are transgendered for a day so that they can go into the bathroom designated for the opposite gender.
  • Incidences of rape will skyrocket due to the fact that men can now go into the women’s bathroom.

Pretty much all of the above is nonsense at best, uneducated, misinformed bullshit at worst. By allowing students to choose which bathroom best fits their identity it will break down the plethora of stereotypes that currently exist and will hopefully bring in a new wave of acceptance, once the initial transition has taken place.

Opponents of bill AB 1266 will need 504,760 signatures on their petition to get their initiative on the November 2014 ballot.
