Todd M. Hughes, a previous Justice Department lawyer, will serve as the first openly gay judge on the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, which deals with claims involving patents, trademarks, veterans benefits and international trade disputes.

President Obama noted Hughes’ sexual orientation during his nomination, however this did not effect him being chosen in at 98-0 vote.

Among other judicial firsts, the President has also appointed the first female Supreme Court Justice, along with appointing the first female federal judges of Chinese, Filipino, Korean, South Asian and Vietnamese descent.
