Disney-ABC series Once Upon a Time recently portrayed Mulan as bisexual, when she almost confessed her feelings to Princess Aurora.
This is pretty cool, it’s a step in the right direction towards bringing in more diverse personalities and showing children that it’s okay to be different (see: something other than a straight, white person) through using their most beloved characters.
Mulan was already pretty badass by defying gender stereotypes and joining the army in China when only men were allowed to join and then successfully showing everyone that she’s a boss and can defeat…the Huns! *Cue the music*
Haters have been saying via comments on the YouTube video that this was simply a cheap ploy to earn the show an LGBTQ badge, however we don’t think that’s the case. Many, if not all TV shows, are concerned about ratings because, ya know, the whole money thing. If viewers aren’t tuning in, advertisers aren’t going to be selling ad space, the show isn’t going to make money and it’s going to get canceled. There’s definitely more than one parent out there who would have a problem with this episode, (even though they shouldn’t) so if the writers didn’t really want to create more diversity they wouldn’t risk losing viewers.
But hey, that’s just our opinion.
