As of 12:01 A.M. EST this morning (Monday), New Jersey will be handing out marriage licenses to same sex couples…hopefully.
So far there has been mass confusion as the state’s Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriage is legal, however Gov. Christie has already appealed the decision, and the court has unanimously denied his motion to stay (which would prevent marriages from happening until the appeal is taken care of).
So basically, NJ will be doling out marriage licenses to same-sex couples until January or so, when hearings will begin on the appeal that the Governor has issued. That case will determine if Jersey will continue to be not the worst state anymore, as the outcome will finally decide if same-sex marriage will continue to be legal.
All of this follows the U.S. Supreme Court decisions from this past summer, which struck down DOMA and Prop 8, effectively making same-sex marriage legal in America.
