RUSSIA-RIGHTS-PRISON-MUSIC-PROTEST-RELIGIONAs many American news sources are ignoring, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova of Russian punk band Pussy Riot has gone missing according to her family, after supposedly being transported from one prison to another.

The transfer took place after Tolokonnikova staged two hunger strikes within the same month in protest of her slave-like treatment at Penal Colony 14 at Mordovia. Her actions were inspired by the torturous treatment that she and other prisoners experienced at Penal Colony 14. Her open letter to The Guardian documents slave-like treatment – beatings, refusal of bathroom breaks and humiliation to name a few – and explains that her hunger strike was a move to get her transferred to another prison for the last five months of her sentence.

Her release date is set for March 2014 which is why many people are wondering why she has disappeared. While being transferred via train through Ulyanovsk and Ufa to Chelyabinsk, her official location has been kept under wraps by Russian officials. Tolokonnikova’s husband, Petr Verzilov told the Daily Beast that he hasn’t heard from his wife in almost two weeks, and as soon as he knew she had made it to Chelyabinsk flew to Siberia to look for his wife. So far he has not been able to find her.

All of this stems from a February 2012 Pussy Riot feminist song performance in the Orthodox Church at Christ the Saviour Cathedral that was done against the church for interfering with state politics in Russia.

Not surprisingly, very few American sources are reporting on this incident.
