Sweden seems to always be ahead of the game, so it’s no surprise that they’ve instituted a rating system for gender bias in movies.
The rating is determined by the Bechdel Test, a seemingly simple checklist of one quality that the film must have in order to be graded with an A. Two named female characters must talk to each other about anything other than a guy. Easy? Nope!
According to Stockholm theater director Ellen Tejle, “The entire ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy, all ‘Star Wars’ movies, ‘The Social Network,’ ‘Pulp Fiction’ and all but one of the ‘Harry Potter’ movies fail this test.”
Awesome. With any luck this rating system will catch on, even just a little bit, and maybe we’ll start to see some changes in female characters in film.
