As everyone knows, father of the Duck Dynasty clan, Phil Robertson, thinks that gays are sinners and black people are entitled. He has now been put on an indefinite hiatus from the A&E show by the network following those remarks that were published in a profile for GQ, a magazine in itself that has published slightly racist sentiments.
A few things about this.
1) Why aren’t more people talking about Robertson’s racist statements? So far the main focus has been his anti-gay one’s, however the man definitely said ““I never, with my eyes, saw the mistreatment of any black person. Not once. Where we lived was all farmers. The blacks worked for the farmers. I hoed cotton with them. I’m with the blacks, because we’re white trash. We’re going across the field…. They’re singing and happy. I never heard one of them, one black person, say, ‘I tell you what: These doggone white people’—not a word!… Pre-entitlement, pre-welfare, you say: Were they happy? They were godly; they were happy; no one was singing the blues.”
In all fairness, even if this statement was true, it’s probably because the blacks that Robertson hung around with were smart enough not to say anything because in those days black people were killed for complaining about racism.
2) Removing Phil Robertson from the show is a) nonsensical, and b) pointless.
Let me explain.
Nonsensical – can you even really remove a man from a REALITY show? This is HIS life! How can you even remove him from it? The show is based on a company that HE created. Without him, there is no show. I guess there’s contractual obligations with the network, but so far this spells an end for Duck Dynasty.
Pointless – removing the talking head from the show does not change the views of others who are still on the show. More than likely, the people who are still on that show feel the same way that Phil does about the gay community and about the black community, they have just been smart enough to not say anything about it because they like being famous and making mad money. They grew up under Phil’s house and therefore probably hold at least a few of his viewpoints. Removing him from the show does nothing to change that.
PS. Fuck you A&E, you two-faced motherfuckers.
The network released this statement to Entertainment Weekly following the viral outrage, “We are extremely disappointed to have read Phil Robertson’s comments in GQ, which are based on his own personal beliefs and are not reflected in the series Duck Dynasty. His personal views in no way reflect those of A+E Networks, who have always been strong supporters and champions of the LGBT community. The network has placed Phil under hiatus from filming indefinitely.”
Seriously? You’re disappointed to have read the comments? As if you didn’t already know about this? Get.Real. Also, we’re pretty positive that his viewpoints are based in biblical teachings, which are definitely reflected in and stand as a major cornerstone of the entire series.
Also, if you were so supportive of the LGBT community, you wouldn’t be paying this guy millions every year.
So basically, A&E thinks it’s totally cool for Phil to be ignorant and politically incorrect as long as it’s not publicly acknowledged, because hey, look at all these ratings and so much cash flow, but as soon as he makes it very well known (as if we all couldn’t have figured this out already) that he’s against gays and doesn’t think highly of black people either, yank him from the program to save face, pacify GLADD and the NAACP, not to mention advertisers, plus prevent viewers from leaving the show. Just so you know, we’re not buying it.
