Excited for Gay Marriage in Utah? Think Again…

Less than a month ago the entire LGBT community and its allies celebrated a huge step forward with the overturning of the gay marriage ban in Utah.

Now, however, many are backpedaling as the governor stated that the state will not recognize gay marriages, including those granted in the state of Utah.

What? Yeah, we’re confused too.

The whole thing is a big confused mess, as marriages granted between December 20th and now will be recognized, but only if an actual wedding took place – just having a marriage license is not enough. But even then, those who are still technically married in the eyes of the court are still not allowed to apply for shared health benefits or allowed to adopt children together.

So, if you are gay and live in Utah and got married and there was lots of alcohol and dancing, then congratulations you’re still married, even though it still doesn’t mean anything in terms of shared benefits and actually going on with your life as a married couple. And if you are gay and live in Utah but there was no alcohol and dancing you’re definitely not married and therefore can’t go on with life as a married couple, just like the married couples who also live in your state.

At least that’s what it seems like. But it also seems like even the courts don’t know what they’re talking about anymore.

What a bunch of nonsense.
