Marlise Munoz has finally been taken off of life support, as of 11:30 am Sunday. The hospital she was being held at, John Peter Smith Hospital in Forth Worth, Texas, did so in compliance with a court order that stated Munoz’s last wishes be granted.
Following a blood clot that prevented oxygen from reaching Munoz’s brain, she was pronounced brain dead in November but held on life support because she was 14 weeks pregnant at the time. The hospital, who many have said were reading the law incorrectly, refused to take Munoz off life support because they felt that the law stated she must be kept alive in order to facilitate the birth of her unborn child.
So basically they kept her as a human incubator, despite her own wishes, her husbands and her parents wishes, in the name of a 14 week old fetus. Talk about women’s rights, huh.
Munoz’s husband, Erick, took the case to court where Judge R.H. Wallace Jr. ordered that she be declared dead and her body returned to her family.
